The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos

In other proposals, the parallel universes bear little or no resemblance to this universe. You have said that the possibility that our universe may not be the only greene hidden reality is an idea that for some time you resisted.

And what eventually made you decide to explore this idea as your next book?

I resisted because the idea of other universes seemed to step outside of science. After all, we greene hidden reality have access to this universe, so invoking others seemed on par with speaking of ghosts or the tooth fairy.

But as my scientific research led me to explore the subject more fully, my view gradually shifted. Such theories can yield predictions testable through experiments we undertake here, in this single universe of ours.

Some such problems simply evaporate. The capacity to summarily dispense with long-standing puzzles is reason enough to seriously consider parallel universe theories.

The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene |

I decided to write The Hidden Reality because I like to capture revolutionary science in the making. And if the multiverse concept pans out, it will be one of the greatest scientific revolutions ever. When in the history of science did the idea of parallel universes first arise? Quantum mechanics requires a radical revision of what constitutes a scientific prediction.

Prior to quantum mechanics, greene hidden reality sought definitive predictions of what would happen in a given experiment. Universe and Universes There was a time when "universe" meant "all there is. The notion of more than one universe, more than one everything, would seemingly be a contradiction in terms.

Yet a range of theoretical developments has gradually qualified the interpretation of "universe. Sometimes "universe" still connotes absolutely everything.

The Hidden Reality

Sometimes it refers only to those parts of everything that someone such as you or I could, in principle, have access to. Sometimes it's applied to separate realms, ones that are partly or fully, temporarily or permanently, inaccessible to us; in this sense, greene hidden reality word relegates ours to membership in a large, perhaps infinitely large, collection.

With its hegemony diminished, "universe" has given way to other terms introduced to capture the wider canvas on which the totality of reality may be painted.

Parallel worlds or parallel universes or multiple universes or alternate universes or the metaverse, megaverse, or multiverse — they're all synonymous and they're all among the words used to embrace not just our universe but a spectrum of others that may be out there.

You'll notice that the terms are somewhat vague. Putting those two things together, we already have a greene hidden reality theory that's mainstream to the point of being conservative. The quantum realities which split off during the very early history of the universe will be substantially different from each other.

The question is whether they're going to be different enough, since we want them to differ with respect to things including settings of the physical constants.

The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos by Brian Greene

This part is still speculative. But you need it anyway in order to make most of the other theories greene hidden reality, and there seem to be moderately well-worked out accounts of how it could happen.

I am sure people must be exploring in this direction.

Greene presents a lucid, intriguing, and triumphantly understandable state-of-the-art look at the universe. Greene has a gift for elucidating big ideas.
